Fortnite icon Enjoy a fun new game genre named "Battle Royale", and the king that keeps the wave going: Fortnite!

Some games are one hit wonders that have a booming population throughout a few years and then disappear into oblivion, while other games are so memorable, they live on even decades later.

However, there are games that are so influential to the gaming community that they pretty much launch their own game genre, the way DoTA pathed the way for all other MOBAs out there.

One game of the latter category is Fortnite, which is the forefront of all Battle Royale games out there, gaining fame within the gaming community faster that one ever thought possible.

A fairly simple end goal

In Fortnite you and your friends will lead a group of Heroes to reclaim and rebuild a homeland that has been left empty by mysterious darkness only known as "The Storm."

The game combines action-packed FPS elements with survival and building elements, making it rather unique among the Battle-Royale games out there.

Of course, the favorite game mode among there is survival mode, where 100 players are deployed on a single map and have to fight until there is only one player left standing.

No typical game tropes available

You start a match by being dropped above the map, and you can either free fall or use your glider to select your landing spot. Once you've reached the ground, you can proceed to start scavenging, hunting other players, or both.

Since this is a survival game, you won't be a stranger to makeshift weaponry, so if you feel like attaching chainsaws to guns, you can pretty much go ahead and try.

Speaking of weaponry, your arsenal can be made up of pretty much anything, both conventional or unconventional weaponry, from machine guns to bazookas and even the pick you are equipped for building purposes.

100 people on a map, only one player left standing

Battle Royale is a stand-alone, free-to-play, 100-player PvP game which comes standard whenever Fortnite is downloaded and has become the hallmark of the game itself.

The steps you have to take to win a match are simple: harvest materials by breaking things with your pickaxe and scavenge for weapons and items of varying rarities in treasure chests, ammo boxes, and supply drops.

You then have to build to defend yourself, move around the map, and attack your opponents, and finally survive the storm.

Social aspects at their best

We all love to show off our skills or at least look like we have skills, and Fortnite lets you gain or purchase all manner of cosmetic items to improve your character's look.

This allows you to create a character that is as unique as you are, with little no chance of ever finding someone even remotely similar.

One great thing to mention is that despite the incredibly vast library of items you can buy from the game store, none have any impact on actual gameplay, therefore you cannot "buy power."

Go all "lone ranger" or with a band of friends

Co-Op is an important aspect in many game modes, and as you will be playing more and more, you will eventually gain friends with which you can chat in-game.

These friends can then be summoned as allies in many of the game modes Fortnite has to offer, thus ensuring that the friends you make are there for you both in and out of the game as well.

The spearhead of the latest gaming trend

Fortnite is a highly competitive game (and for a good reason, since only one player can win out of 100 in battle royale mode), but this doesn't make it an elitist game since you can find all manner of players clustered on the same map.

This, along with the excitement that comes once the numbers on the island dwindle more and more make this game a thrill ride that only gets more entertaining as the clock ticks.

While Fortnite may not have any spiritual successor to look up to, current trends show that this game is going up, with no signs or getting tired yet.
