Microsoft implemented several high DPI improvements in the last Windows 10 feature updates, and it looks like the same approach will be used for the upcoming 19H1 release too.

The most recent preview build shipped to insiders comes with another change aimed at fixing blurry apps on Windows 10 devices.

Windows 10 build 18277 sets the automatic fixing of blurry apps as default behavior, so whenever you launch an app that may not be rendered correctly on a high DPI display, the operating system should kick in and repair it for you.

Enabled by default

The feature has been gradually implemented in Windows 10, and in the upcoming 19H1 update, it will be enabled by default for everyone.

“As many of you know, we’ve been working over the past few years to improve the High DPI story for Win32 (desktop) apps on Windows. As part of this, some of you may recall getting a toast about fixing your apps that led you to this setting we added with Build 17063,” Microsoft says.

The feature is available under Settings > System > Display > Advanced scaling settings and you can manually turn it off if it’s not working correctly.

Of course, this doesn’t mean that all blurry apps would be correctly fixed by Windows 10, and a test I did this morning shows that there’s still room for improvements. In some cases, however, developers themselves need to update their apps for high DPI displays, and the new modes implemented in Windows 10 could only make apps be usable, but not be rendered flawlessly on such a screen.

Windows 10 19H1 is projected to be finalized in the spring of 2019, so more improvements in this regard could be shipped in the meantime. The RTM build should be signed off in March 2019.
